plantgril project log, updated as needed

Date:  Saturday 31st May 2025A new painting for autumn that is very spring like, a cheerful group of irises. I’ve been exploring a fast pace and loose approach to painting, with a limited pallete, all mixed into the colour before. The results feel inviting and moving.

Date:  Tuesday 15th April 2025I’m so incredibly thrilled with this project! I reached out to the team at Amplify because I love what they do, I drew up a whimsical concept for them and finally today spent the day painting it on their front window. I always enjoy this process so much and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Window painting always feels like a sweet moment where all my skills come together to create something special.

Date:  Monday 31st March 2025The lovely team at Office Fora reached out to comission this painting of a well loved project for the family. I had never tackled such a complex scene, I went back and forth over the reflections in the windows and the little scenes behind looking for balance. It was a challenge but a very rewarding one!

Date:  Thursday 13th March 2025I made my first painting post-move! I was inspired but the dryer Australian flora and the colours of the landscapes here, I worked on paper with my usual acrylics. It was a nice ease in to another year of painting.

I was very lucky to make this super cute illustration for Neat Places! We wanted an image of a hospitality venue, so I imagined this place up, taking little bits of inspiration from my favourite bakeries, cafes and wine bars. I drew this on paper with ink pen and then digitized the drawing to be printed on tote bags. This felt like a milestone project in my illustration career, I really trusted my skills and didn’t rely on any tech to realize this scene.

Date:  Saturday 1st February 2025I now have a sewing machine in my new home in Naarm! I had a great push to create some fibre art with it, I sewed together 858 squares to create this sweet pixel image out of cream and black cottons, I loved the monotanous process of this creation. I then added a fabric border and stretched it onto a frame. It was such an enjoyable process and a step towards future fibre explorations.

Date:  Saturday 18th December 2024When I visited my family home in December I dug out my old Pentax MX-1 camera out of the attic, very pleasantly surprised to see it in not only perfect condition but also a great quality camera I had purchased years ago! So I have been happily snapping away enjoying documenting what I see.

Date:  Friday 17th December 2024Hello! I’ve been making lots of drawings since I moved to Melbourne, i’ve been really inspired by having so much to see around me and visiting the museum and galleries to draw all the little things.

Date:  Thursday 7th November 2024Tomorrow I will exhibit my paintings at a local gallery here in Tāmaki Makaurau called Ūkaipō, there are 34 pieces in total to hang, we will also have some locally sourced wine and snacks to celebrate the community here. It feels like such a huge achievement to have put this all together myself.

The illustrations on this poster are lifted from my sketchbook, most were drawn in Japan.

Date:  Thursday 7th November 2024At the end of the month I finished up painting. I am so happy with the pieces I’ve made and the growth I’ve earnt over the month. It was a lot of work but I’m so glad I did it!

Date:  Monday 21st October 2024More painting continues! The prompts for these were Burrow, Slow, Fast and Rest. I love these loose prompts that I can take where I like. Slow and Fast are made from references I saw in Japan.

Date:Tuesday 15th October 2024
New dress made in cotton shirting! I fell in love with this plaid as soon as I saw it! I’ve been making variations of this style for a while, but I think this is very very close to being my perfect summer dress! I love pattern matching as it is so satisfying, so this dress sees a lot of beautifully lined-up checks! I think I’ll wear this to my exhibition :-).

Date:  Monday 14th October 2024For these paintings, the prompts were Apricot, Pixel, Wheel and Earth. I love how cohesive these feel together, orange and green are my favourites to put together in a composition. These paintings were made in quite different ways, some very loose and some super planned, but they all feel like mine.
